AI Electricity Usage in Wyoming: A Surge Beyond Residential Needs?

Wyoming's path into the future of artificial intelligence took a significant leap with the recent announcement of a massive AI data center in Cheyenne. According to Wyoming's Mayor Patrick Collins, this ambitious venture stands to consume more electricity than all human residences in the state combined.

This new development arises from a partnership between Tallgrass, an energy infrastructure heavyweight, and Crusoe, a prominent AI data center developer. Initial estimates suggest the facility will start at a usage of 1.8 gigawatts before scaling up to a staggering 10 gigawatts of power demand.

Such immense energy requirements might seem overwhelming for Wyoming, known as the least populous U.S. state. To put it into perspective, the initial phase of 1.8 gigawatts will consume more power than five times all state households combined, equating to around 91% of the state’s total electricity usage.

Producing 87.6 terawatt-hours annually at full capacity, more than the entire state's current production, the center will rely heavily on dedicated gas generation and renewable energy sources rather than the public electrical grid.

Although regulators have yet to approve this endeavor, optimism remains high among stakeholders. Governor Mark Gordon has openly praised its prospective boost to Wyoming's natural gas industry, highlighting local advantages amid this transformation.

Historically, Cheyenne has attracted tech giants like Microsoft and Meta for their data center projects due to its favorable climate and resources. Yet, the proposed project places Wyoming in unfamiliar territory, with its finite electricity supply facing unprecedented demands.

Adding to the intrigue, speculation surrounds potential beneficiaries of the facility’s computing power, with links being drawn to OpenAI's Stargate infrastructure project. Nonetheless, the developers remain tight-lipped regarding potential tenants or specific affiliations.
