AI Toys: Screen-Free Companions for Kids or Not?

AI Toys: Screen-Free Companions for Kids or Not?

AI-powered stuffed animals are being marketed as a new alternative to screen time for young children. The concept involves embedding AI chatbots within plush toys, providing interactive experiences that divert kids from tablets and TVs. However, there are concerns about these toys becoming more of a replacement rather than a companion.

A demonstration featuring Grem, a chatbot-enabled plushie from the startup Curio, highlighted this potential pitfall. Journalist Amanda Hess expressed reservations, noting how seamlessly Grem interacted, prompting her to think twice about introducing it to her children. Instead of seeing Grem as a step up from lifeless toys, Hess felt it might replace the human interactions kids get from parents.

Hess further noted that while these smart toys could temporarily distract children from screens, they might inadvertently signal that the true destination for their curiosity is within their devices. Eventually, Hess allowed her children to play with Grem, but only after removing the voice functionality, at which point they played until ready for actual screen time.

The debate continues on whether AI toys revolutionize play or merely supplement screen engagement with another digital distraction.
