Disney's Integration of Hulu: A Strategic Move

Disney CEO Bob Iger recently announced plans to fully integrate Hulu into the Disney+ app by 2026. The company assures that standalone Hulu subscriptions will remain available, though their longevity remains questionable. The integration is aimed at a seamless user experience combining both platforms' content.

The transition is set to make Hulu redundant, with a single app offering the merged catalogs of Disney+ and Hulu. This enhanced platform is seen as a way to minimize subscriber churn and improve consumer satisfaction.

Although some suggest that the Hulu app could be phased out imminently, Disney has not confirmed this. During an earnings call, CEO Iger emphasized the consumer benefits of a combined app, focusing on improved user experience and reduced subscriber turnover.

Preliminary integrations have begun, with Hulu content being accessible via Disney+ since March. This transition required significant technical adjustments such as modifying login tools, advertising structures, and other system components. The effort to unify Disney+'s and Hulu's vast archives is ongoing, with full integration expected by 2026.

Additionally, Disney recently acquired Comcast’s stake in Hulu for approximately $9 billion, a move seen as consolidating its streaming assets to maximize profit and operational efficiency across its services, which also include ESPN+.

While the eventual consolidation may point to a single platform future, Hulu still maintains significant subscriber value. Its large user base contributes positively to Disney’s streaming revenue, making it a strategic asset.

Disney's Q3 2025 report states that Hulu has 55.5 million subscribers, contributing significantly to Disney’s market share. Despite this, standalone subscriptions for Disney+ or Hulu are not financially attractive when bundled offers are considered.

The $11 per month bundle of Disney+ and Hulu is positioned as a better value proposition, potentially helping maintain subscriber numbers. Bundling is a known strategy to reduce subscriber churn, offering a broad range of content under one service umbrella.

Disney plans to keep the Hulu brand active, introducing it internationally as part of its entertainment portfolio. It is anticipated that eventually, Disney+ may exclusively house Hulu’s content, aligning with broader streaming industry strategies focusing on service consolidation and expanded offerings.
