Genetics Testing Startup Nucleus Genomics Faces Backlash Over Embryo Product

Nucleus Genomics, a genetic testing startup founded by Kian Sadeghi in 2021, has been at the center of controversy for its products that claim to correlate genetics with complex issues like IQ. Recently, the company intensified the debate by announcing a new product called Nucleus Embryo.

The announcement was made via a tweet stating: "Every parent wants to give their children more than they had. For the first time in human history, Nucleus adds a new tool to that commitment." This product claims it can test IVF embryos not only for known genetic diseases but also for traits such as appearance and intelligence.

While genetic testing of embryos is not new, Nucleus's approach uses controversial "polygenic scores" to predict complex outcomes like intelligence and anxiety. These scores are generally used within populations rather than individuals due to their probabilistic nature.

Critics have expressed disbelief and concern over these claims. A venture capitalist commented on social media about feeling nauseous at the idea of creating designer babies through such technology.

Nucleus defends its methods by citing research supporting polygenic screenings for certain diseases. However, experts caution against using these scores for individual predictions due to lack of guidelines and ongoing research improvements.

The startup is backed by notable investors including Founders Fund and Alexis Ohanian’s 776. Despite previous controversies over its products like Nucleus IQ, which faced criticism as "bad science," Sadeghi remains committed to advancing genetic optimization technologies.
