Google Gemini Learns From Chats: Options Explained
As Google weaves Gemini ever deeper into its technology ecosystem, the way in which this AI interacts with user data is constantly evolving. Google has now introduced notable changes to Gemini, allowing it to retain more chat details for better responses. However, if this is concerning, there's an option for temporary chats that won't influence how Gemini perceives you.
A few months ago, Google implemented a 'personalization' feature in Gemini, using Google search history to inform responses. It was largely unappealing to users, leading to its removal. Now, an updated version called Personal Context is debuting. This feature lets Gemini remember previous conversations, adjusting its replies accordingly without explicit prompts.
Personal Context aims to deliver more relevant recommendations through chat interactions, distinct from the saved instructions feature, which involves explicit user-issued guidance. While this has the potential to enhance user engagement, there's a risk of fostering misconceptions if the AI becomes too personable, which can lead to unfounded beliefs.
Initially, Personal Context is rolling out with the Gemini 2.5 Pro model but is unavailable in the European Union, the UK, or Switzerland. It’s restricted to users over 18, with anticipated wider availability, including compatibility with the more efficient Gemini 2.5 Flash model.
For greater control over data, users can disable Personal Context or use Temporary Chats, which act as an incognito mode alike Chrome's feature. This setting ensures that personal data doesn't contribute to ongoing AI learning, although there will be a 72-hour server retention period for conversation reference.
With Google's continuous personalization drive, it's wise to stay informed. Starting September 2, user data such as chats and file uploads will be sampled for AI training. To prevent this, users must opt out by altering the 'Keep Activity' setting. It's essential to review this setting soon, as Google's data-capturing will intensify if left unchecked.
