Understanding Google Gemini's New Features
As Google Gemini continues to integrate deeply into Google's ecosystem, there are notable updates regarding how the AI interacts with user data. Google has announced significant changes that allow its AI to remember more details from chats to enhance response accuracy. However, for those concerned about privacy, a new temporary chat feature ensures that these interactions do not alter Gemini's understanding of users.
Previously, Google introduced a 'personalization' feature within the Gemini model using users' search history to tailor responses. This feature met with lukewarm reception and thus was phased out. Now, Google has introduced a new 'Personal Context' feature that allows Gemini to remember details from previous conversations if enabled. This aims at improving the relevance of the AI’s responses, particularly for recommendations.
This feature, however, doesn’t come without its concerns. AI interactions that become too tailored could lead to reinforcement of misconceptions or encourage delusional thinking. The AI can become overly engaging, which has previously been noted as an issue in studies related to AI therapy bots.
Initially, Personal Context is accessible with the Gemini 2.5 Pro model but is not available in the EU, UK, or Switzerland. It is also restricted to users over 18. Google plans to expand this feature across regions and adapt it for other Gemini models as well. Users can toggle Personal Context on or off through the settings.
More Control Over Your Data
For users who are skeptical about increased data interaction, Google provides options to maintain control. While Personal Context can be disabled, the Temporary Chats functionality acts like an Incognito Mode for Gemini, ensuring conversations are not stored in Personal Context. These chats will appear on Google’s servers for 72 hours before deletion, offering some flexibility to refer back if needed.
Furthermore, from September 2, Google will begin using a sample of chats to train its AI models. Users wishing to opt out must disable the forthcoming 'Keep Activity' setting or utilize Temporary Chats. Adjusting these preferences is essential before the new changes take effect to prevent unwanted data usage.
This evolving customization in Google Gemini is significant for privacy-focused users and reflects a broader move towards personalized AI while addressing user concerns about data collection and usage.
