Live Updates from Google I/O 2025

Google's annual I/O developer conference is back, and it's packed with exciting announcements! Held on May 20 and May 21, the tech giant is unveiling updates on everything from Gemini AI to Android 16 and Android XR, its latest platform for augmented and mixed reality headsets and smart glasses. Expect a deluge of AI news across all services and devices.

Gizmodo is here to help you navigate through the keynotes and developer sessions. Our team, including Senior Consumer Tech Editor Raymond Wong, Senior Writer James Pero, and Consumer Tech Reporter Kyle Barr, will be reporting live from Google's Mountain View headquarters.

May 22: Good Game, Everyone! Now Hit the Showers

The Google I/O event has concluded with a whirlwind of previews in XR glasses, shoppable AI, web search enhancements, video generation tools like Veo 3, and more. Google's future vision centers heavily around AI integration across its products.

"Our hands-on experience with Google's gadgets was brief but insightful," says Ray Wong. "This isn't the last we'll see of Project Aura or other innovations."

May 21: Google Beam Me Up… Into Your TV

The new Google Beam technology offers lifelike 3D video calling without glasses. It captures multiple streams of video to create a realistic communication experience.

"The technology gets out of the way for genuine communication," notes Raymond Wong after his hands-on experience.

May 21: All Alone in the Press Lounge

The second day at Google I/O felt quieter than expected. The press lounge was nearly empty compared to Day One's bustling activity.

"I can't tell if that's sad or whether I should be sad that I bothered coming in," reflects Ray Wong.

May 21: Veo 3 Gone Wild

The new Veo 3 video generator is now available for preview. Users are testing its capabilities with some wild results akin to OpenAI's Sora model.

"I'm not sure what people will use Veo 3 for yet," says James Pero about its potential applications beyond gaming simulations like Fortnite streams.

A Look Ahead

This year's Google I/O has set a clear path towards an AI-driven future with innovations that promise to reshape how we interact with technology daily. Stay tuned as Gizmodo continues to cover these developments!
