Louisiana Attorney General Takes Legal Action Against Roblox

The Louisiana attorney general has initiated legal proceedings against Roblox, claiming the platform has neglected basic safety measures, potentially making it an unsafe environment for children. Filed by Attorney General Liz Murrill, the lawsuit alleges that Roblox facilitates the spread of harmful content that endangers children in Louisiana. These accusations include the platform’s substantial failure to implement adequate safety controls, leaving users, especially minors, exposed to predators.
Roblox, widely used with 82 million daily active users, finds a significant portion of its audience under 12 years old. Of these, 20% are reported to be under the age of 8. The lawsuit criticizes Roblox for prioritizing revenue over safety, thus jeopardizing children's welfare.
Highlighting several problematic interactions, the lawsuit specifically mentions explicit content on the platform like “Escape to Epstein Island” and “Diddy Party.” The attorney general's statement stresses the danger these inadequacies present, urging parental vigilance against the risks associated with Roblox.
In its defense, Roblox claims advanced monitoring measures are in place, including human moderation that operates around-the-clock. The company emphasizes their efforts to prevent the circulation of inappropriate content and reinforce safety across its digital environment.
Although reports suggest recent safety updates from Roblox, such as restrictions on direct messaging among younger users, Murrill’s lawsuit argues these actions came too late and were insufficient to address the underlying issues.
The legal action seeks an injunction to permanently restrict Roblox from making unfounded safety claims and prevent violations related to trade practices under Louisiana law. This high-profile lawsuit underscores ongoing concerns about the safety of interactive online platforms for younger audiences.
