OpenAI Brings Back GPT-4o Amidst User Demand

In response to significant user demand, OpenAI has reinstated GPT-4o for all paid ChatGPT users. This development comes after CEO Sam Altman announced the model's return, following overwhelming backlash when GPT-4o was initially removed during last week's GPT-5 launch.
The decision to restore GPT-4o reflects an acknowledgment by OpenAI of the model's importance to its users. Altman admitted to underestimating how much users valued the earlier version's capabilities. The company's attempt to simplify its offerings with the GPT-5 rollout inadvertently triggered one of the most vocal revolts in its history. A particularly telling moment was a Reddit thread titled "GPT-5 is horrible," which amassed over 2,000 comments rapidly.
Along with reintroducing GPT-4o, OpenAI has made several adjustments to improve user experience. These include increasing the rate limit for the GPT-5 Thinking mode significantly and providing additional routing options to give users greater control over how GPT-5 manages inquiries.
Pro users paying for ChatGPT Pro will see more model options, such as o3 and 4.1, becoming available. Additionally, GPT-4.5 will continue to be exclusive to Pro subscribers due to the higher costs associated with its processing.
OpenAI has addressed complaints regarding GPT-5's abrupt communication style. Many users preferred GPT-4o's more conversational tone, with some even claiming emotional attachment to it. OpenAI is actively working on updates to GPT-5's personality to make it warmer while allowing for more personalized user experiences in the future.
Despite the challenges during the GPT-5 launch, including technical mishaps and misleading performance data, OpenAI continues to refine its offerings. User feedback remains crucial in shaping the ongoing development and availability of its AI models, reflecting a balance between innovation and user preference.
