OpenAI Restores GPT-4o After User Revolt

After facing significant user backlash, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the reintroduction of GPT-4o to ChatGPT. The model returns as a default option for all paying ChatGPT users, following widespread discontent over its removal during the launch of GPT-5.
OpenAI's decision to remove older models with the new launch was an attempt to streamline offerings. However, this move led to an unprecedented user revolt, as thousands voiced their displeasure, particularly in online spaces like Reddit, where discussions called the new version "horrible."
Acknowledging this, Altman admitted the company misjudged the significance of features users cherished in GPT-4o. To address these concerns, OpenAI not only reinstated GPT-4o but also made various adjustments to improve GPT-5's usability, such as enhancing message rate limits and adding routing options like "Auto" and "Fast."
Further, OpenAI recognized that many users criticized GPT-5 for its "abrupt and sharp" output, contrasting with the more conversational tone of GPT-4o. Moving forward, Altman stated that OpenAI is developing updates to better align GPT-5's personality with user preferences.
Despite the backlash-fueled return of GPT-4o, OpenAI continues refining GPT-5, suggesting future adjustments might be necessary to better balance between innovation and user satisfaction. For now, the company is providing users with choices to accommodate diverse preferences, hoping to maintain a harmonious user base while pushing technological boundaries.
