OpenAI Reintroduces GPT-4o Following User Backlash

OpenAI has reinstated its AI model GPT-4o into the ChatGPT lineup after public outcry from users. The decision comes as OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, announced the return of GPT-4o following a massive user backlash to its removal. This action unfolded amidst the chaotic rollout of GPT-5, which led to an uproar among the ChatGPT community.
The initial removal of GPT-4o was an effort by OpenAI to streamline its AI offerings, coinciding with the launch of GPT-5. However, this attempt to transition users over to the new model backfired dramatically. Thousands of users voiced their dissatisfaction, resulting in one of the most substantial user revolts in ChatGPT's history.
In response, OpenAI reintroduced GPT-4o, which became readily accessible to all paid ChatGPT users, including those with ChatGPT Plus accounts. To further ease user frustration, OpenAI implemented changes such as increasing the message limit for GPT-5 from 200 to 3,000 messages per week, and introduced new routing options to give users greater control over their interactions with the AI.
OpenAI's strategy involves rolling out additional models, including o3, 4.1, and the "GPT-5 Thinking mini", with a focus on providing more choice to Pro subscribers through a "Show additional models" toggle. This variety is coupled with the continued exclusivity of the GPT-4.5 model for Pro users due to its high computational cost.
The GPT-5's launch issues were not limited to its predecessor's removal, but also included technical glitches such as the malfunctioning of an automatic routing system and misrepresented performance data during its launch.
To address stylistic concerns, OpenAI acknowledged feedback regarding GPT-5's output style, deemed too "abrupt and sharp" in comparison to GPT-4o’s conversational tone. OpenAI is working on personality updates for GPT-5 that would ideally present a closer experience to its predecessor.
As the situation develops, OpenAI aims to balance the push for innovation with user satisfaction by offering a greater range of AI models and customization options. While GTP-4o's return marks an important step in user accommodation, further adjustments and personalization options are anticipated to adapt to audience preferences.
